Miscellany for deletion (MfD) is a place where Wikipedians decide what should be done with problematic pages in the namespaces outside of the main namespace (also called the "article namespace") which aren't covered by other specialized deletion discussion areas. Items sent here are usually discussed for five days; then they are either deleted by an administrator or kept, based on community consensus (determined using the discussion as a guideline).
Introduction
The only currently-used namespaces in which pages are eligible for deletion here are:
- Help:
- Portal:
- MediaWiki:
- Wikipedia:
- This includes WikiProjects, although it is usually preferable to either mark the Project as historical or change it to a task force of the parent Project, unless the Project is entirely undesirable.
- User:
- When a page in the User or User talk namespaces seems worthy of deletion, please explain your concerns using either a personal note or by adding " ~~~~" to their talk page. While this step is not required, it does assume good faith and civility; often the user is simply unaware of the guidelines, and the page can either be fixed or speedily deleted using db-userreq.
- the various Talk: namespaces
- Userboxes, regardless of namespace.
The undeletion of pages deleted after having been discussed here, and debating whether discussions here have been properly closed, is the purview of Wikipedia:Deletion review, which operates in accordance with our undeletion policy.
Please familiarize yourself with the following policies
Prerequisites
Please bear in mind that:
- Nominating a Wikipedia policy or guideline page, or one of the deletion discussion areas (or their sub-pages), for deletion will probably be considered disruptive, and the ensuing discussions closed early. This is not a forum for modifying or revoking policy.
- Nominating for deletion a proposed policy or guideline page that is still under discussion is generally frowned upon. If you oppose a proposal, discuss it on the policy page's discussion page. Consider being bold and improving the proposal. Modify the proposal so that it gains consensus. Also note that even if a policy fails to gain consensus, it is often useful to retain it as a historical record, for the benefit of future editors.
- User pages about Wikipedia-related matters by established users usually do not qualify for deletion.
- Normal editing that doesn't require the use of any administrator tools, such as merging the page into another page or renaming it, can often resolve problems.
- If a page is in the wrong namespace (e.g. an article in Wikipedia namespace), simply move it and tag the redirect for speedy deletion using db-reason using the reason: Redirect left after a cross-namespace move - G6 Housekeeping and notify the author of the original article of the cross-namespace move.
How to list pages for deletion
Please check the aforementioned list of deletion discussion areas to check that you are in the right area.
To list an article/page for deletion, follow this three-step process: (replace PageName with the name of the page, including its namespace, to be deleted)
| I. |
Edit PageName.
Enter the following text at the top of the page you are listing for deletion:
-
or
-
if nominating several related pages in an umbrella nomination.
or
-
if you are nominating a userbox in userspace or similarly transcluded page.
- Be sure to include "subst:", not just mfd; this is easier on the servers.
- Please include in the edit summary the phrase
Added MfD nomination at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName
replace PageName with the name of the page that is up for deletion.
- Please don't mark your edit summary as a minor edit.
- Check the "Watch this page" box if you would like to follow the page in your watchlist. This may help you to notice if your MfD tag is removed by someone.
- Save the page
|
| II. |
Create its MfD subpage.
The resulting MfD box at the top of the page should contain the link "this page's entry"
- Click that link to open the page's deletion discussion page.
- Insert this text:
- -- ~~~~
replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion and Reason... with your reasons why the page should be deleted.
- Consider checking "Watch this page" to follow the progress of the debate.
- Please use an edit summary such as
Creating deletion discussion page for PageName
replacing PageName with the name of the page you are proposing for deletion.
- Save the page.
|
| III. |
Add a line to MfD.
Follow this edit link and add a line to the top of the list:
-
Put the page's name in place of "PageName".
- Include the discussion page's name in your edit summary like
Added Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName
replacing PageName with the name of the nomination page you are proposing for deletion.
- Save the page.
- If nominating a page that has been nominated before, use the page's name in place of "PageName" and add
- PageName
in the nominated page deletion discussion area to link to the previous discussions and then save the page using an edit summary such as
Added Template:priorxfd to link to prior discussions.
|
- While not required, it is generally considered civil to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the miscellany that you are nominating. To find the main contributors, look in the page history or talk page of the article and/or use TDS' Article Contribution Counter or Wikipedia Page History Statistics. For your convenience, you may add
~~~~
to their talk page, replacing Article with the pagename. Please use an edit summary such as
Notice of deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName
replacing PageName with the name of the nomination page you are proposing for deletion.
- If the user has not edited in a while, consider sending the user an email to notify them about the MfD if the MfD concerns their user pages.
- If you are nominating a Portal, please make a note of your nomination here and consider using the portal guidelines in your nomination.
Project created with only one member. Aside from the fact that the scope of the project is ten articles, all of which are already GA or FA, a similar project failed to attract significant attention previously on WikiProject council. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 23:22, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
I didn't really think that I'd be able to keep it. Oh well...Hi878 (talk) 23:41, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
Delete. Cherry-picked diffs being used to make a case against me in AN/I about a dispute that is now weeks old. The story being told on this page amounts to an attack on me, since it severely distorts the nature of the disputes. The user who created this page has refused to engage reasonably on the talk page of the article in question, and has instead launched numerous personal attacks against me in talk while edit warring on the main content of the page. This page is not a page he created to collect evidence; it is a page he created to "swiftboat" me, painting a completely distorted picture of the content dispute in order to achieve some sort of sanction on me. It would be better to participate in the discussion instead. -- csloat (talk) 17:33, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Comment - I've asked the user what the purpose of the page is, which we should find out before voting to delete or not. // roux editor review 17:38, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Fair enough; my understanding is he is preparing for an AN/I report against me (he already filed such a report here but it was dismissed, correctly in my estimation, as a content dispute). He has also given some indication of his purpose in his posts to other editors soliciting participation -- here, here, and here. In any case, that's my understanding of the page's purpose, but perhaps he will have a different explanation. csloat (talk) 20:35, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Keep Looks like preparation for some sort of post - we are not mindreaders, but the article as it is now appears not to harm anyone. No one seema to look at it or link to it, and commentary when preparing posts for ANI or the like are permitted. Meanwhile, searching out posts by others is generally not a very fruitful endeavor. As the page has existed for only four days, it looks more like one person is stalking every page edited by another editor. Collect (talk) 12:31, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- No, we're not mindreaders, that's why we read what the person actually writes instead. Please read WP:STALK before throwing around baseless accusations. csloat (talk) 14:54, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
I thought this was a type of encyclopedia site where users could learn about anything and everything. I wanted to make this site so that a user could log onto it and learn the roles and rules of the game. Also, How the use of items [weapons, armor and skills] play a different role in each part of the game. To give a user the ability to learn about the hierarchy.It seems to me that being censored before you have even finished a page is happening here. How can you decide, investigate or assume without having a page to view?
Isn't that censorship being used in the worst way?
Guild Leader [MBON]
12.22.162.61 (talk) 02:47, 4 December 2008 (UTC) Hello this is a page made by the Guild Wars Guild named, what else but Mixed Bag Of Nuts.
Our guild was recently started in recent days. We have established a Guild Hall. It is very time consuming as well as the fact that it costs a fortune!
To be able to recruit new members to your guild it is always presumed they will join a guild with maximized inventory/cash and fully functioning Guild Hall. It is also reasonable to expect a Guild Cape as well as have active memembers who play often and can help others. A benifit to the Guild itself is thee Alliances. A guild is one group of players who in turn belong to an Alliance.
In the process of all of this there are Leaders, Officers and Members. Each Guild has all of those. Alliances have 1 Leader and the other Guilds are associated with the Lead Guild.
We will be putting up images from the game of several members to show you types of characters, armor, weapons and locations within our Guild. We will classify ranking ,as well as, giving tips on the game itself.
We all work or have school so it won't be a swift 123 done project. We want to make this the best site we can with the most accurate information possible. For all you speller Bee's out there feel free to fix any and all typos/spelling you'd like to! thanks for visiting, come back again soon!
Mixed Bag Of Nuts
12.22.162.61 (talk) 02:47, 4 December 2008 (UTC) I am not really sure if i'm doing this right. I recently started a guild in Guild Wars. I have since developement started to fill my guild hall and join an Alliance. A member registered the page and typed what he did on his own. It was NOT on behalf of the guild. I strive to make this web page a very imformative learning experience. The game is very complex and has many elements to it. It will be a continual process. It was represented through that first line he typed in that it would just be another photo album. I assure you that is not the guilds intentions. We intend to be active and informative. I just hope you will take this into consideration.
Thank you for your time,
Guild Leader of [MBON] Mixed bag of nuts (talk) 08:28, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Delete: The objectives of this "guild" has nothing to do with improving Wikipedia in any way. It's intended to be a kind of a forum to discuss and share information about this game. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free web host, and I'd suggest you start a blog or something similar if you want to have a site like this, but Wikipedia is definitely not the place for this kind of thing. I originally moved(copy/pasted) this article here so that the original creators could work on sourcing it and such. After a few edits, it seems like they completely abandoned the project. He's an admin and perfectly capable of deleting this himself (and likely would if asked). Is there some reason I'm missing that this should be deleted? I mean, I don't really care either way but in the grand scheme of things aren't there way better things to be worried about than copies of deleted templates in the userspace of mostly inactive admins? -- Rick Block (talk) 02:30, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
This looks to be an abandoned WikiProject that never got off the ground. There is very little edit history, most of which consists of cosmetic edits. The last two edits were maintenance tag edits in September and October. The creator had also been contacted in regard to its progress a few months ago. -- (Guyinblack25 talk 23:27, 2 December 2008 (UTC))
In addition, there are several subpages which should also be deleted along with the main page.
The project's creator has also been notified of this nomination. (Guyinblack25 talk 23:34, 2 December 2008 (UTC))
I am not really familiar with MfD, but I've seen fiction Portals MfDed before and nominate Portal:Stargate for deletion because it makes sense to me and because my note at WT:STARGATE from a week ago didn't get any comment to keep this portal around. My reasons for deletion are that this portal is unmaintained and hence completely out-of date (nearly two years behind), two regular wikipedians from WP:STARGATE (I and pd THOR) didn't even know it existed for long times; this portal has to my knowledge only even been linked from a handful of Stargate articles (there used to be over 500 SG articles at one point), although it is admittedly linked from each Stargateproject talkpage banner now; and it reproduces content that is already present in the article Stargate (where any reader is directed when he types "Stargate" into the search box). Included in this nom are the transcluded portal subpages
- Move - I'd remove the mention from the talkheader, and then move all the pages into some subspace at WP:STARGATE for ease of resurrection at a later date. // roux editor review 15:57, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- Move - I'd support Roux's mass move, linking only to its new location on WT:STARGATE. It has a lot of information and framework still useful to the project for a resurrection/update of the portal at a later time. TransUtopian (talk) 17:07, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
This project was created in January, 2008, by an editor who has had only four edits since that month. Project as it exists is rather poorly formatted, and has only the one listed member. The only subsequent edit to the project page has been the nomination for deletion. Creator of the project is being notified of this discussion. John Carter (talk) 22:16, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Delete. Has only "This project encompasses all the pages which list countries. Please add your name here to join." and its creator, who has been largely inactive since January. Potentially interesting and useful project, but it has had little if any attention since creation, only two listed members, and at best minimal development. Subject might be better covered elsewhere, perhaps as task forces of the relevant national projects. Both listed members are being notified of this dicussion. - Weak keep. EuroHistoryTeacher joined after the MfD was opened, showing there's interest in the project. The structure is extremely skeletal, including its banner on only one page at the moment, but it is a start and has potential. Gotyear (talk) 15:38, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Neutral Sadly, the lack of interest would suggest to me that people aren't really interested in joining this project. The Red Hat of Pat Ferrick t 12:17, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
Proposing deletion of project page and all related subpages. Project has existed for just under two months now with little if any apparent interest from anyone beyond the founder. Project's apparent scope is the American Classical League and related articles, and there is some question whether that content is sufficient to merit a separate project. Creator and only member of the project is being notified of this discussion. John Carter (talk) 17:39, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Keep and Review later The project does not appear afoul of anything other than not getting a lot of interest in its first two months. That, to me, is insufficient for deletion. Collect (talk) 17:56, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
Everything from here on down is old business; the 5-day review period that began on 28 November 2008 has ended. Everything below this marker should be dealt with and removed from the workflow. Move this marker up as time passes. Editors may continue to add comments until the discussion is closed but they should keep in mind that the discussion below this marker may be closed at any time without further notice. |
You decide - here is the entire text on the user page: Sean Dempsey is famous for getting his single, "Breakin' Up" remixed by Dutch DJ Tiesto and Californian based DJ Shadow. - "Deleted article" is not an argument for deletion of User pages. Most people who are really into "self-promotion" find words to be like potato chips. Two sentences would be a most remarkable example of "self-promotion." Collect (talk) 14:44, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
