The 173rd Special Troops Battalion (STB) was officially activated at Warner Barracks in Bamberg, Germany on June 8, 2006, as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team (ABCT). The battalion was activated under the command of the current Battalion Commander LTC Jeffrey Milhorn. The 173D STB was organized to include an engineering company, a military intelligence company, and a signal company. Many members of the STB were drawn from the 82nd Engineer Battalion which was deactivated March 30.
The 173D STB also known as Task Force Raptor is currently deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF 07-09). TF Raptor's area of operations (AO) is primarily the eastern province of Nangarhar.
