The 2009 National Hurling League will commence in February 2009. 34 GAA county hurling teams, 33 from Ireland (includes South Down), and London, will contest it.
Format
The 2009 format of the National Hurling League is a new system consisting of four divisions. There are thirty-four teams competing: Divisions One and Two have eight teams in each, Division Three consists of two groups of six, and there are six teams in Division Four.
Division One
Division One contains eight teams. Each team plays all the others once. The top two play the final; the winners of the final are the 2009 NHL champions. The eighth-placed team are relegated.
Division Two
Division Two contains eight teams. Each team plays all the others once. The top two play the final; the winners of the final are the 2009 Division Two champions and are promoted. The eighth-placed team are relegated.
Division Three
Division Three contains twelve teams, split into two groups of six. Each team plays all the others once. The top two in each group play the semi-finals; the winners of the final are the 2009 Division Three champions and are promoted. The two sixth-placed teams play off; the losers are relegated.
Division Four
Division Four contains six teams. Each team plays all the others once. The top two play the final; the winners of the final are the 2009 Division Four champions and are promoted.
