History

Benjamin Griffith was awarded the first land grant in what is now called Mauldin in 1784. The name of Mauldin was given to the town almost accidentally in 1820 thanks to South Carolina's Lieutenant Governor, W. L. Mauldin. The train station was called "Mauldin" because the Lt. Governor had assisted in getting the Greenville Laurens Railroad Company to come through the village. Over time, the entire area took the name of Mauldin.

During the Civil War, many of Mauldin's citizens left to fight and the city virtually dried up. It never completely recovered until after World War II when the city was once again incorporated as a town (1960).

Mauldin High School

Established in 1927, Mauldin High School has an enrollment of about 2400. It is part of the Greenville County School District. The school has had many state championships in all of its different sports. Mauldin is well known for its successful baseball program. In 2004, the Mavericks swept Stratford High School, led by Matt Wieters and Justin Smoak, in a best-of-three series for the state title. They attempted to become the first class AAAA team in over twenty-five years to win back-to-back state titles in 2005 when they lost to Stratford 2-1 in the best-of-three series. Mauldin missed the playoffs for the first time in twenty-three years and snapped a twenty-year streak of posting twenty or more wins in a season after posting a dismal 13-10 record in 2008. In 2007 the girls cross country team won state for the third time in a row. This was the 15th combined state title for coach Delmer Howell since his arrival to Mauldin in the 80s. In 2008, the Speech and Debate team also claimed the state championship for the fourth consecutive year.
