Lakes (Arabic: ?????????; transliterated: al-Buhayrat) is one of the 26 wilayat or states of Sudan and one of the 10 states of Southern Sudan. It has an area of 40,235 km˛ and an estimated population of approximately 350,000 (2000). Rumbek is the capital of the state. In addition to Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Bahr el Ghazal, and Warrap states; Lakes, is also in the Bahr el Ghazal region of Sudan. Bahr el Ghazal itself is former province split from the Anglo-Egyptian mudiriyat, or province of Equatoria in 1948. The eastern border is the White Nile with Jonglei across . To the northeast lies Unity (also known as Western Upper Nile). Warrap state towards the northwest, Western Equatoria to the south and west, and Central Equatoria to the south.
Like all states in Southern Sudan, Lakes is divided into 8 counties, each headed by a County Commissioner. The counties are further divided into Payams, then Bomas. Lt.Gen. Daniel Awet Akot of the SPLM is governor of the state.
