History

The community was chartered in 1781. The territory was disputed land between Vermont and New York. The original name appears to be a contraction of "Allenburgh."

In the 1930s, the US Post Office enforced a spelling change to "Alburg."

Name change

In April 2006, the Vermont Board of Libraries approved Alburgh's request to change its name from Alburg to Alburgh. The name had been changed against the town's wishes in the 1800s and finally reverted after years of requests. [1]
